A couple of weeks back I was having a chat with my children (boy-13 & girl- 9). My daughter had come home earlier wanting to know what virginity meant, how people mate and if mating was fun. my first thought was ”where did she get all that from” the next thought that immediately followed was ”think up the right answers fast”! so I called a sit down with both of them so we could discuss it. I didn’t just want to rattle answers that would satisfy her present curiosity instead i saw an opportunity to not only give bible based answers (Christians that we are) but also find out what my 9th grader and my 6th grader had heard about it. Wish it was that easy! I have now come to the conclusion that the 13years old of my time is the 8-9 of today! When i think about the questions discussed and answered that fateful day I cannot but wonder as to how their mind works. I kept a straight and expressionless face throughout the discussion but believe me my mind was whirling at the level of questions that was fired at me and the way they were formed. It showed that whatever children are passing around (which is in most cases wrong) is a lot more detailed than we would want them to know at certain ages. THE INTERNET IS NO HELP!!!
I strongly believe it’s time for parents to address issues, especially those pertaining to sex and all that has to do with it before they learn from the ”ever eager to pass on what i heard-read-saw mini teachers”. I feel the age of protecting them from these issues is long gone, so we should arm ourselves to teach all that is necessary any time an opportunity presents itself, it could be something seen on TV that would be create an opening, or a line in a song, whatever it is we should be prepared to use these opportunities to answer questions they are reluctant to ask as well as subtly instil our values along with it.
I cultivated the habit of answering questions truthfully, practically, logically and i finish off with what the bible has to say about it. I leave room for healthy arguments and discussions, that way they can think it through and thus be able to defend their answers should it contradict whatever is said among their peers about the topic. *sigh* Parenting!
