I was having a conversation with a lady I met at a social gathering and she told me she had a 18 year old Filipino Nanny that she paid $3,000 for them to bring her and she also pays her N65,000 monthly. She also mentioned alot of people have them now as nannies. I actually thought she was stretching the truth a bit. But come to find out later on that I do know other people with Filipino nannies. Is this not human trafficking? I doubt these girls come to Nigeria on their own accord.

This could indeed be human trafficking. Does the girl have her passport with her at all times? Is she free to quit and return to her country when she wants to? Is she treated decently? If the answer to any of these questions is “no”, then…

It is a strange twist of events that history will repeat itself, but this time the Africans are “masters” and “madams”. Hmmm.

there are indeed more of these foreigners coming to Nigeria to work as domestic staff…it really shows how the lines between countries and continents are disappearing…Nigerians open (or frustrated by domestic staff) to hiring foreigners for domestic work and the foreigners themselves being able to earn good money outside their home countries. they also get free housing and food…..

I lived in England for many years and many families would hire Filipino nannies because they are so hardworking, and were relatively cheap compared to their English counterparts. I would get quite a few Filipino nannies in the baby development classes that I ran, and many of them were mothers themselves with children in the Phillipines who came to earn some money to educate their children. They came freely, of their own accord. I did not witness or suspect any form of human trafficking, but, that’s not to say there isn’t any… The free housing and food YWee mentioned means they can send a large proportion of their money home where it makes a huge difference to their families. Filipino nannies are also good at recommending or bringing replacements when they decide it’s time to leave – often a relative, and so you can enjoy many years of continuous service from them.
