Is Palm Oil Really An Antidote Or A Myth

At a young age, most of us were told that Palm oil is an antidote for poison ingestion. We were made to believe that Palm oil has the ability to neutralize poisonous substances and therefore, it should be given as first aid to anyone who has swallowed or taken in anything poisonous. Over the years, this notion has been passed down from generation to generation.

A 2-year-old boy drank HYPO bleach kept in a TABLE WATER BOTTLE unknowingly. The mother who had received the “Palm oil is an antidote” advice, gave the child a lot of Palm Oil.

The child aspirated the oil, the fumes of the palm oil entered his lungs and the child could no longer breathe well. He eventually died in the hospital.

It was discovered that the child did not die from drinking the HYPO, but from the excess Palm Oil given. To put it another way, the child died from the Ignorance of sincere people.

It’s time to put a stop to the myth of Palm Oil being an antidote to poisonous substances. Where for any ingestion of poison the first thing you reach for is Palm oil to induce vomiting.

Here are some FIRST AID tips for a Poison emergency

  • If the poison is swallowed: Remove anything remaining in the person’s mouth. A small amount of water or milk should be given immediately before the person is taken to the hospital. Additionally, If the suspected poison is a household cleaner or other chemical, read the container’s label and follow instructions for accidental poisoning.
  • If the Poison is on the skin: Remove any contaminated clothing using gloves. Rinse the skin for 15 to 20 minutes in a shower or with a hose.
  • If the Poison is in the eye: Gently flush the eye with cool or lukewarm water for 20 minutes or until help arrives.
  • If the Poison is inhaled: Get the person into fresh air as soon as possible.
  • If the person vomits, turn his or her head to the side to prevent choking.
  • Begin CPR if the person shows no signs of life, such as moving, breathing or coughing.

After theses first aid measures have been taken, the person should immediately be taken to the hospital for proper treatment.

Parents, try as much as possible to keep harmful substances far away from your child’s reach, in order to prevent sad and avoidable situations such as this.
