A Christmas Tale

Situational Tuesday- A Christmas Tale

A Christmas Tale

Aisha looked amazed. They are at it again. The Onyekas, they seem to prepare for that particular day this way. She has never seen them do it differently.

It would start with Oyinye chatting her ears off in school, of how this is going to be different. How her uncles are coming up. “Oh, guess who is coming again?” she would push and tease Aisha. Of course, I knew who it was.  So just like the Onyekas, Aisha was also looking forward to that day as well.

Aisha sat on their dining table this time, waiting for Oyinye who said they should take a 15-minute break from their studying. Now it’s almost an hour. She sighed. Oyinye is usually like this about this D-day as she would put it.

Aisha held her chin in her hands. She decided that she was just going to wait patiently and enjoy the conversation going on between Oyinye and her dad, instead of her mulling on the fact that time is far spent.

She has always enjoyed their conversation anyway. It has always warmed her heart.

Being borders, she and Oyinye, her friend of 9 years, now her best friends forever, have always loved any holidays, so long as it is long.  As it is, this particular holiday here seems to be the only one that is just perfect!

Being Muslims her parent, don’t do as much as the Onyekas, but she doesn’t mind, she has always spent that day with Oyinye’s family.

The thing is everyone is happy and exceptions are given to certain things…. like drinking as many Coke and Fanta one’s stomach can take. She smiled. Unlike her, Oyinye always wears a beautiful new dress! She sighed again. She has been trying to convince her own mother to always buy her a new dress for that day. “Aish”, as her mum would fondly call her “but you have new clothes that you haven’t worn, please wear one of them” she would say.

Aisha simply enjoys that day. And to add to it, she gets to always see him…. Kachi, her first love. She’s been crushing on him for as long as she can remember, and Oyinye has been teasing her mercilessly for years. She just doesn’t have the guts to go tell him yet. I mean which 13-year-old would. She just has to wait till she is like 18 and then tell him. She sighed again.

Well…that day should hurry and arrive.

“Christmas” She whispered.

Aish!! She jolted back to life as Oyinye jabbed her in the rib. “Hmmmmm” She said smiling.

Yes Christmas” Oyinye teased. And yes, Kachi is coming this year, she whispered.

Flushed, Aisha denied, “well I did not ask you for that” Well I thought that was what you wanted to hear since you were so keenly listening to the conversation between my dad and I, she whined, then smiled. Aisha looked at her face and they both giggled.
