Situational Tuesday: Aso Ebi Or School Fees?

Should you have to decide between aso ebi or school fees? Tired, Bukky dumped her bag on the bed. She grumbled as her phone rang. Then she made a face as she looked to see who was calling it was her sister in law, calling from the U.S. Her first daughter was getting married.

“Hello Aunty Bose. Ekaa san ma” (Good afternoon ma).

“Ha! Opa melo” (How many yards)? she exclaimed.

“3 yards”? She exclaimed further sitting up on the bed now.

“Yes ma, she said. I will tell him ma”, she said and hung up.

Dazed, she stared at the phone. Is aunty serious? N250,000 for 5 yards?  For aso -ebi. That’s 500k for her and her husband, not to mention the clothes they would buy for the children. To add pepper to injury, the wedding is holding in Dubai.

She walked out of the room thinking how does one exactly explain to people that they need to cut down their expenses (dagger style) especially with the state of the economy. Although by the grace of God they are blessed. They just cannot afford all this now especially with the children’s school fees due!

Aso Ebi or School Fees?

While pondering she bumped into her husband, she saw that his mouth was full. Like a little child caught red-handed, he smiled sheepishly. “Tunde are you munching on another cake again”? She asked sternly. He smiled even more sheepishly, I was hungry he defended.

She got right to it, “Anyways your sister just called and she said that the Aso-ebi for the wedding is 500,000 naira! 500k for what? Her husband shouted! Spraying her face with cake. She burst out with laughter. Tunde was still looking perplexed and somewhat angry as he pushed passed her. I am going to give her a call immediately he shouted.

She ran after him as he made his way to their bedroom. “Honey please do not call her right now, she is probably asleep” she pleaded, folding her arms in front of him. By now he had put the rest of the cake on the table.

Her husband turned to face her and said slowly honey, you know we cannot afford this right now. We have school fees looming and the children are resuming in 2 weeks. I know you do not want me to call her due to what happened last time between the two of you, but I am sorry, I have to tell her we cannot. I will give her a call first thing tomorrow morning. She either chooses another range of prices, or I will not drop a dime for the contribution”. With that said, he stormed out of the room leaving her standing by herself.

She didn’t blame him; she is his sister, he doesn’t need to put up appearance, she is the one that needed to make good with aunty; after what happened last time that nearly tore the family apart.

She followed her husband, although not happy with the issue at hand, she must plead with him to make it possible for peace sake. She reasoned that school fees can be paid late.

Mums what would you say? Aso-ebi for peace sake or school fees?
