You are ready to wean your baby and might be wondering what you can feed your baby. Below is a weaning meal timetable guide.

As we discussed last week on how to wean, babies still need their milk as a major part of their meals. At 6 months, your baby should continue to breastfeed on demand or get 4-5 feeds, if bottle fed with a total of 17-20 ounces of milk in a 24-hour period.

As you refer to the weaning guide for baby from 6 months old, remember that it is a journey and you need to go slowly. The goal at the onset of weaning is to get baby used to eating solids, thereafter increasingly get to a place where milk becomes less and less of baby’s main meal.

Weaning Meal Timetable

Weeks 1-2 (Introduction to Weaning Stage) 

  • At wakeup: Breastmilk or infant formula milk (around 4oz)
  • Mid-morning/Breakfast: Breastmilk or infant formula milk (around 4oz)
  • Lunchtime: single fruit/veg puree followed by breastmilk or infant formula milk. Fruit options like steamed apples or mashed banana. Vegetable options like boiled/steamed and mashed carrots, peas or ugwu.
  • Mid-afternoon: Breastmilk or infant formula milk (around 4oz)
  • Early Evening: Breastmilk or infant formula milk (around 4oz)
  • Bedtime: Breastmilk or infant formula milk (around 4oz)

Weeks 2-3 (Getting Used to Weaning and Exploring Stage)

  • At wakeup: Breastmilk or infant formula milk (around 4oz)
  • Mid-morning/Breakfast: Breastmilk or infant formula milk (around 4oz)
  • Lunchtime: Fruit/veg puree, followed by breastmilk or infant formula milk. Options here could be mixed steamed apples and banana puree, pear and apples, mashed pawpaw. Vegetables like carrots, peas, spinach etc.
  • Mid-afternoon: Breastmilk or infant formula milk (around 4oz)
  • Early Evening: well-cooked pasta or rice and vegetables. To make home-made rice cereal you can grind your rice in the blender and then cook till very soft and add your vegetables.
  • Bedtime: Breastmilk or infant formula milk (around 4oz)

Week 4 (Getting the Hang of It)

  • At wakeup: Breastmilk or infant formula milk (around 4oz)
  • Mid-morning/Breakfast: rice mixed with breastmilk or infant formula milk (around 4oz)
  • Lunchtime: Meal options include amala and ewedu with crayfish, boiled potato with meat, finger food such as bread and cheese or titus with boiled sweet potato.
  • Mid-afternoon: Breastmilk or infant formula milk (around 4oz)
  • Early Evening:  Meals such as broccoli and marrow (zuchini), mashed avocado and okro soup/ewedu with chicken and amala.
  • Bedtime: Breastmilk or infant formula milk (around 4oz)
