Today the 26th of September, marks the celebration of the annual awareness campaign, World Contraception Day.The annual worldwide campaign centers around a vision where every pregnancy is wanted. It aims to improve awareness of contraception and enable young people to make right and smart choices. This is critical to increase the positive effects of sexual and reproductive health.

What is Contraception

Contraception refers to all procedures and methods that involve interference with the normal process of ovulation, fertilization, and implantation to help protect against sexually transmitted diseases (STIs) or pregnancy for different reasons. It involves the use of various drugs, sexual practices, agents, devices, or surgical procedures and has been followed by many different peoples and societies across the ages and continents.

In the world today, it is globally recognized that millions of girls and women would like to delay or stop bearing children but they do not know how. This lack of knowledge might cause them to use the wrong methods of contraception. It might also cause them to  illegally abort which is dangerous to their health.

World Contraception Day aims to make a difference with coordinated and systematic efforts engaging whole communities and focusing on sex and contraceptives. Communities in the developing countries (which have the highest percentage of unintended pregnancies) welcome these awareness initiatives.

Contraception has many benefits.

It prevents health risks such as STD or death. It supports family planning, slows down population growth, empowers people, enhances education etc. The risks decrease and the better decisions made, secure the well-being of girls and women.

Contraception is not only beneficial but important. There are various methods and each person has one suitable for them. It is important to talk to your doctor, partner, and parents (especially for young people) about your decision before embarking on it. It isn’t something to hide or be shy about. Be honest and informed. A Contraception move only shows you are taking responsible steps to protecting yourself and “your child”.

Communication around contraception includes empowering your child to make choices, to abstain, to understand the implications of sexual activities and separate lust from love.

Participate

Everyone can partake in World Contraception Day in their own way. If you have children, educate them on sex and sexuality. Don’t ever feel like the time is not right. You don’t have to go into the depths of it when they’re still tender in age because there are different approaches to educating them. Ignorance is no longer an excuse for a child to make the wrong decision.

Empower individuals and communities to act collectively and be a part of the awareness – World Contraception Day so we can all transform the world through the awareness of contraception.

Remember, it is your life, take charge
