Importance Of Play For Children – Family Entertainment

For young children; play is often a full-body activity that helps them develop skills they will need later in life. Once your child is around the age of 3 or 4, they start to become more interested in other kids than in their toys. Children also build their mental and emotional muscles as they create during playtime.

University of Denver researchers Elena Bodrova and Deborah J. Leong; found that children teach themselves to regulate their emotions and think before they act when they play. Studies show that children use more sophisticated language when playing with other kids as compared to when they play with adults.

Whether it is messy, creative or role play, it is an essential part of learning.

Types Of Play!

Free Play

This is an unstructured play that encourages children to explore and design their own games. The wonderful thing about free play in the outdoors is that it offers different benefits to different age groups.

Pretend Play

Pretend play requires a child to imagine scenarios and then act them out. The freedom of these types of playing allows children to be creative.

Associative Play

Young kids continue to engage in parallel play and they also enter the stage known as associative play. During this stage, kids take what they learned from the earlier stages and use it to engage with other children. They practice while playing.

Cooperative Play

Cooperative play is where all the stages come together and children truly start playing together. It is common in older preschoolers or in younger preschoolers who have older siblings or have been around a lot of children.

The cooperative play uses all of the social skills your child has been working on and puts them into action. Whether they are building a puzzle together, playing a board game, or enjoying an outdoor group game, cooperative play sets the stage for future interactions as your child matures into an adult.

Real-time social interactions and play are much better for children than digital media for learning such as tv or computer. They need to engage in fun, rejuvenating play as we did as kids. Play is so essential for child development around the world that the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights recognizes it as a right of every child

Importance Of Play Time!

1. Playtime sets the stage for a lot of important skills like socialization, problem-solving, cooperation and language development.

2. Social skills are learned as part of the give and take of play. During childhood play,  kids learn about verbal communication, body language, boundaries, cooperation and teamwork.

3. As adults, you continue to refine these skills through play and playful communication. Give your child time and space to act out imaginary scenes, roles and activities.

4. Adult play is a time to forget about work and commitments and to be social in an unstructured, creative way. By giving yourself permission to play with the joyful abandon of childhood, you can reap oodles of health benefits throughout life.

5. Also, allow children to have the opportunity to learn to play an instrument. They can get many benefits including the development of motor skills, listening, understanding of symbols and language, understanding of some maths skills and the pleasure of being able to succeed at a new skill.

6. Because play is the language of children, children who have difficulty putting their thoughts in words can often speak clearly through play therapy.

7. It is also likely that children experience a stress release after physical play, in the same way that adults do after physical exercise.

The Benefits When Parents play with their Kids

Children who played with their parents and also participated in other activities, had positive mental health,  stronger friendships and experienced a stronger family bond when compared to those whose parents did not play with their kids as much.

When parents increase their levels and quality of interactions with their children, children become better prepared for school and personal success.

When children are given opportunities to act out scenes and express themselves, they improve their social confidence, increase their ability to see the perspectives of others and increase the attention they give to the literature.
