Can you tell us about yourself and the many roles you play?

I’m Dr. Joy Isa, an education consultant, author, speaker, youth and couples counselor, and a bi-vocational minister at The Elevation Church.

A Fun Fact About Me

I sometimes watch wrestling! It reminds me of my childhood, and I also enjoy football with my family.

How did you meet your husband, and how long have you been married?

Samson and I were actually set up! My church mentor thought I was a “good girl” for him but didn’t tell me. He checked me out, and though our first impressions weren’t the best, 29 years later, we are grateful for that divine connection!

Do you and your husband share the same parenting style?

Not at all! We are both strong-willed and driven, while our children are more easygoing. I am more of an explainer and guide, while my husband was initially more of a disciplinarian. Over time, we have learned to merge our parenting strategies for the best results.

What is one of the funniest things your children did growing up?

When my son was about six, he called his sister a “lying tongue” because of something she said. We had been reading Proverbs, and he remembered that verse—it was hilarious!

What do you love the most about your work?

I thrive on data analysis, problem-solving, and innovative thinking to improve education. I love helping educators refine their craft, ensuring children enjoy a fulfilling learning experience.

What inspired you to become an education consultant?

Since 2008, I’ve been leading teacher training sessions. After serving as President of a university in East Africa, I returned to Nigeria to focus on education consulting full-time.

Can you share more about your business journey?

We’re in the pilot phase, focused on offering professional development courses for teachers and school leaders. Since launching in October 2022, we’ve trained over 2,000 educators and partnered with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria.

Biggest Challenge: The cost of quality training in a tough economy. However, we are innovating to make professional development affordable.

Biggest Win: Schools in Port Harcourt saw a dramatic shift in student behavior after implementing our positive discipline strategies.

What have you learned about preparing children for the future?

Every child is unique! It takes engaged parents and dedicated educators to raise independent, responsible adults.

What’s different about parenting today versus when you were growing up?
  • Communication: Parents now engage in two-way conversations, unlike the past, where children were just expected to listen.
  • Access to Information: Today’s digital natives often know more than their parents in certain areas!

How do you balance work and motherhood?

Work-life balance is a myth! Instead, I prioritize different areas in different seasons of life.

What’s your go-to self-care routine?

I unwind by listening to music, playing word games, and swimming.

One motherhood myth you want to bust?

“You will always like your kids.” Not always! Sometimes they’ll drive you crazy, and that’s okay!

What’s your advice to other mums?
Don’t walk alone! Build a support system and probe situations before making judgments about your children.

What surprised you about starting your own business?

The amount of bootstrapping required in the first two years was incredible. Also, as an educator, I had to learn marketing to sell my services.

How do you balance ministry and career?

I apply the same organizational and leadership skills to both. My role as a bi-vocational minister allows me to combine my faith and professional work seamlessly.

How do you set goals for a new year?

I prefer reflective goal setting over New Year’s resolutions. Reviewing past successes and failures helps me plan better.
