The first virtual MTN mPulse Spelling Bee reached a climax with a phenomenal grand finale on Saturday, December 12, 2020.

The competition which commenced on October 19, 2020 had over 16,000 of participants from various parts of Nigeria with fifteen-year-old, Snow George from Starville School Abuja taking the crown as the mPulse Spelling Champion. You can watch how it all went down here.

There were amazing moments from the competition. Here are five highlights that held us spellbound:

  • It was an end-to-end digital competition: It goes beyond generic as it was a virtual one for primary and secondary school students from over 30 states in Nigeria who participated in the MTN mPulse Spelling Bee. If you are wondering how it could have been possible, don’t think too far. MTN mPulse made it a reality.
  • Contestants came prepared: Certainly, it was the finale and mouthwatering prizes were to be won. We were really entertained and dazzled at how the finalists spelt words some adults probably cannot spell. However, not all of them could scale through to the final round of the competition.
  • The rise of spelling geniuses: In every competition, there are those who stun the audience with their level of brilliance. The mPulse Spelling Bee was not an exception as the children dazzled the virtual audience with their abilities to crack difficult words within a twinkling of an eye. We won’t forget when one of the finalists spelt the word ‘Rhododendron’ in five seconds.
  • A new Spelling Champ emerged: After defeating many people to emerge the spelling champion, Snow George, a 15-year-old from Starville School, Abuja was announced the winner of the 2020 edition of the mPulse Spelling Bee. She indeed made her parents, teacher and school proud.
  • Beyond the winner’s prize: Everyone loves to be appreciated for their efforts no matter how little. MTN Nigeria clearly understands this and provided consolation prizes for all the finalists in the competition. For this year’s competition, all 20 finalists got over 5 million Naira cash prize. They also got Laptops, mobile phones, MTN mPulse goody bags among many others. The teachers and even the winner’s school were equally rewarded.
