Are We Watching a Worldwide Movie

This past week you might be one of the people wondering – are we watching a worldwide movie? we have seen some laws passed and ideas being pushed that really does feel like a movie script. It is also a kind of warning of what the world seems to have become – one where anything goes.

It seemed to have started with the Supreme Court in the US legalising same sex marriage. Then a few days later it seemed to appear all over the news that the German Ethics Council (made me check the meaning of ethics again) wants adult incest legalised – their argument is that if they are consenting adults they should be free to have the type of relationship they desire.

God's word

As if that was not enough drama to wrap up the first half of 2015, there was the ruling out of Japan quoting a judge as saying “As long as the intercourse is for business, it does not harm the marital relationship at all,” the interpretation of this is that adultery for the purpose of business is legal. Here closer to home, the South African courts ruled that adultery is legal.

No matter what seems to be happening what I do know is that the word of God does not ride on a “trendometer” and it is not based on what the world labels as “okay” or “right”. The world has different trends but what is for certain is that God’s word and how he has said we should live does not change with the season. If God has said it, then it is the same truth yesterday, today, tomorrow and forever.

God's word

It is the same way I heard a mother who was trying to be modern, say that it is not cool anymore to tell children to abstain from pre-marital sex, as she put it “no one waits till marriage anymore to have sex” – really? The truth is that everyone needs to decide on what foundation and basis they want to operate from and live their lives. A parent can decide to raise his or her child to believe that the rules of the world are sufficient or choose to raise a child who knows that he or she is in the world but not of the world – they have very different goals and will get very different outcomes.

All these happenings in the world should be alarming to everyone and calls for those who will stand on the truth based on the word. What is right and wrong should not be based on who can give the most intelligent argument or compelling reasons of why same-sex marriages are really okay. This is the time for the refrain W.W.J.D (or S) – What would Jesus Do (or Say) to come out loud and clear as a benchmark for living in this very seemingly anything goes world. wwjd

As PT said today “the word of God is not a buffet for you to pick what you like and ignore what you do not like” this is very true when you are taking God’s word, it is not based on how you feel or what you like but what God has said. Rather than despair or join the everything goes bandwagon lets remember that Jesus said to us as children of God “You are the salt of the earth….. you are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:13-14). We are meant to reveal and illuminate the truth by the way we live our lives.

We who know are not meant to confuse the truth of the word with the rules of the world. “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32)
