LagosMums held the 4th Annual Parenting Conference and Exhibition on Saturday, October 14th at the Eko Hotel Victoria Island, Lagos. The event was themed “Parents Winning” and had over 1000 mums registered, 30 vendors, 30 speakers and 9-panel sessions on various topics.

This year LagosMums offered mothers with young children a creche while the mums were able to attend the various sessions. Yetty Williams, the founder of LagosMums and the convener of the conference, had promised that the event this year would be “bigger, better and offer more” and indeed it lived up to its promise. The event was an all-day affair offering the attendees an opportunity to hear from experts and other parents on the different stages of their parenting journey. The exhibition hall also offered attendees the opportunity to shop, sample products and get lots of free products, some of these included a sampling of banga jollof rice from the Maggi stand, Golden morn garnished with different toppings, baby products from Pears and Huggies.

The speakers this year cut across various industries, interests, expertise and are all passionate about discussing different matters that affect parenting and families today. The sessions and panel discussions were lively, well attended and very informative.

The panels kicked off in the morning discussing education and technology. The Education and Equipping Children for the future panel had Anya Omajuwa-Oteri, Nursery Manager at St. Claire’s Nursery, Peace Ezenwafor, COO Tuteria, Junnifa Uzodike Founder Nduoma Education from Birth, and was moderated by Enimien Inegbedion, Director Arcadia Montessori.

The Parenting and Technology/Digital media 101 for parents panel had Charity Babatunde, founder Rave-Et-Al Limited who presented on the importance of DQ, the digital quotient of children. Also on this panel were Jade Adedeji, CEO, Stem Mets Resources Ltd and Sam Uduma, Head of Commercial Growth & Partnerships, Amore Media Ltd. The panel was moderated by Tewa Onasanya, Founder/CEO, Exquisite Magazine Services Ltd. it was a very educative discussion on technology and the influence of social media on children.

The Children and Milestone panel featured Mrs. Bolanale Adewole, Founder & Executive Director, The Learning Place Centre, Lekki, Mrs. Tosin Babalola Special Needs Expert, a mum Monisola Olorunfemi who shared her experiences with special needs. The session discussed the importance of identifying children’s milestones, how to identify red flags and what actions to take in such cases. The focus being that early intervention is certainly the best.

The Parenting talk show panel, which was tagged “keeping it real” allowed parents to ask and discuss all matters while not holding back. On this panel were Joy Isa, Pastor Elevation Church, educationist, and counselor, Taiwo Akinlami Total Childhood management & child development expert, Busola Odusanya, Lawyer and Self-development Enthusiast, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi Coordinator, Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team and moderated by Tomi Aluko. This panel was certainly very lively, honest and detailed with many of the challenges and realities of raising children in the 21st century.

Health is wealth and this was discussed on the healthy lifestyle panel. There was also a focus on the importance of proper nutrition for the children and family. The session had Toyin Onigbanjo, Founder AugustSecrets, a Nutritionist, Journalist & Motivator, Yemisi Ilo, Co-founder Battabox, Dr. Sade Adeyi, Global Primary and Urgent Care Physician, Dr. Oluwatoyin Akinsiku, Lagos University Teaching and moderated by Tope Mark-Odigie, Convener, The Sexually Confident Woman, makeup artist and public speaker.

Work-life balance is always a real question for working women and “mumpreneurs” alike. The panel session Mumpreneur and Boss Lady had a range of mothers and professionals who shared their experiences with work-life balance and strategies on running successful businesses. On the panel were Chizor Malize, the branding, and marketing expert, Managing Partner and CEO, Brandzone Consulting LLC, Wole Lawani, Enterprise Technologist, Business Strategy Consultant and ED, Shopp!ng, Simi Nwogugu Coach & ED Junior Achievement Nigeria and Augusta Nwokafor, Business Development Strategist and ED, Ashrob Agencies. The panel was moderated by Anulika Enemuo, Global Business Coach, and Speaker.

Every business needs to master social media for maximum exposure and growth. Janelle Dowell, Global Social Media Strategist, and Adjunct Professor, Visual Communications Department, City Colleges of Chicago (USA) took attendees through a social media masterclass, sharing tips on social media strategies for business.

The panel Parents Winning featured coaches, Mr. Lanre Olusola, Life Coach and Founder, Olusola Lanre Coaching Academy and Izefua Erhaboh, family coach. To speak on raising godly children were Mrs. Nkoyo Rapu Founder, Bethesda Child Support Agency, Pastor Kola Fabiyi, Geologist & Motivator and Lami Phillips-Gbadamosi singer, stage and TV Actress. Parenting must be mindful and intentional to be effective. The panel shared practical tips and strategies to raise children with the right values. Parents were encouraged to have a vision of the kind of child they want to raise and start from there.

When it comes to women and their families, finances should not be ignored and Mrs. Nimi Akinkugbe was on The woman, her family and her finances panel discussing the importance of having a handle on finances. A representative from Assist 2 Sell discussed the importance of real estate and how women should get on the real estate ladder.

A group of educationists from the UK led by Mark Brooks, an education consultant, addressed the attendees and shared information on what parents should consider when choosing a school in the UK for their children and wards. Parents were encouraged to start considering the options of an overseas education early enough to give them the opportunity to plan, save and choose the best option. The attendees got the opportunity to interact with representatives and admissions officials from several top UK boarding schools.
