TGIF Parents! It’s another weekend and we will be looking at how to reduce stress and tension in the family together. Stress has become a norm in the work-life of most parents and if care is not taken, could lead to making the home a very tense environment. Tension in the family leads to unease and lack of expression of self; this affects children more and can threaten to sever family bonds altogether.

Parents have a responsibility to themselves and their children to maintain and strengthen family connections; making the home a haven. Here are five things to do to reduce said tension.

Communicate with each other

Instead of ignoring our children and partner when they are feeling tense, we should try and converse with them. This will encourage them to open up on the things that are bothering them at work/school. We as parents should ask our children how their week was either at school or around the neighborhood; teenagers might be reluctant to share their feelings, but a show of genuine concern will make them come around.

Share household chores

Sharing tasks in the home is can bring a new sense of togetherness to the family. Assigning chores for the weekend such as cleaning, sweeping, arranging, and so on; to even the youngest member of the family will reduce tension due to partiality. It can also serve as a fun activity to see who is done with their chore first.

Eating Together

Having a decent meal together is important in every family. Sitting together over a homemade dinner will allow for communication between all members regarding things that are causing them stress. This will ease tension, especially in children, whereas parents will find out things about them and teach them how to deal with stressful situations in the future.

Have a Family Weekend out

Finding the time this weekend to hang out as a family will help ease the stress of work and school. Visiting areas such as the Zoo, beaches, and other tourist attractions centers will connect us with nature and ease any underlying tension.
