At LagosMums 5th Annual Parenting Conference And Exhibition, the first panel was titled “Parenting Today – It starts with Parents” and this was quite apt since the theme of the day was “The Future – Our Children To The World”.

The speakers were Lanre Olusola – parenting coach, Dakore Egbuson-Akande – actress and humanitarian and Yetty Williams – founder LagosMums, was the moderator.
The session was enlightening as the speakers talked about what it takes to be a parent in the 21st century. The panel shared practical tips and strategies to raise children with the right values.
Parenting is about helping God birth his purpose and mandate in your child’s life.
What name do you call your child? What promises has God told you? Your child’s name births their purpose. As you call their name, your purpose should be to speak life into them. The first people children get their validation from are their parents. Are you validating your children and their talents or are you making them have low self esteem and feel bad?
Parenting in the 21st century has to be intentional.
Do you know your child’s friends and teachers? You need to be aware of the influence that they have outside of your home. It’s true that parents are busy half of the time, but you need to make out time to be there for your children. Ask questions, engage them. Children love to share stories. All you need to do is show them that you’re interested in knowing what is going on in their lives. Be an Intentional parent!
[How to be intentional about parenting in the 21st century ]
Parents have to stay relevant to be able to connect with children in the 21st century.
If you don’t know what is going on in the world around you there’s no way you can connect with your children on their level. What are the things they talk about? Can you have a conversation about how awesome Spongebob is with your child? In that same conversation, can you switch to why mathematics is cool too then talk about a YouTube star your child loves. It’s only when you know about what they’re interested in that you can guide them on what is right and wrong.
As a parent, it is also important to have a vision of the kind of adult you want to raise and start from there.
Have a vision for your family’s mandate. What are your values?Articulate them and share it as a family. Have a vision of the adults you are raising and work towards it!
Mental wellness is key to being an effective parent.
Have a solid support system there is never anything wrong with talking to a professional or coach.
Also, be careful who you give a visa to and let into your home. Be mindful of negative influences.
