Teachers Exploring Through Mentorship

Many children experience trauma through ongoing exposure, throughout their early development, to abuse, neglect, domestic violence, bullying. And it is clear that trauma can cause serious problem with learning and behavior. Abuse and trauma is particularly challenging for educators to address because children often don’t express the distress they are feeling or they may mask their pain
School personnel, particularly educators should be the first line of defense in protecting children from abuse (unfortunately with the recent reports in newspapers and social media this seems not be the case). Teachers play an important role in the detection and reporting of child abuse.
Based on this Funda Wazi Foundation whose mission is ‘to provide child-friendly and relevant resources and tools for children and adults that will assist them to learn and know how to address and control social challenges affecting children with a particular emphasis on child abuse’ is organizing the Teachers Mentoring Program (T.E.M). The Teachers exploring through Mentorship (T.E.M) is a bi-annual program where professionals act as role models, offer advice and guidance regarding education, knowledge, skills and for their mentees.

This year, the foundation will be focusing on the theme: “Strategies for effective prevention of children from abuse and related trauma”. The effective intervention and protection of children in schools relies upon a sound understanding of the impact of abuse and related trauma by educators and the ability to implement mitigating or support plans for children.  At the program we intend to enhance the capacity of parents, teachers, head of schools and caregivers to effectively reduce the social vices risk that children may be exposed to and create a safe and nurturing learning environment.
