Diary Adventures of LagosMums| How are you using your DP?

The other day Mrs. Rapu asked us in the congregation the question “how are we using our DP”? DP is your display picture usually seen on your phone.  Are you updating it with encouraging words? A positive message? Or is it simply a tool to show how you look on any given day? Your new expression for the hour? Or to show how pouty your lips can get?

Over the last few days I have noticed quite a lot of self love going on. The number of young ladies that I have seen under no special circumstances turn their phone around, purse their lips, tilt their head to an angle and take a shot of themselves is surprising. The question is would people be taking a picture of themselves randomly if there were no audience and or outlet for it? There is whatsapp, blackberry, facebook, twitter and so many other ready advertisement slots for these pictures instantly.

I have also watched closely to see what they do after they take the picture. Sometimes they do nothing and sometimes you see them clicking away on their phone perhaps as they turn it into their latest display picture. Even the name used to refer to this place is a display picture, which means what you want to display – to which you have a choice!

I saw a young lady hold up the line at checkout at shoprite because she decided to take a self-portrait of herself right there on the checkout line. I have seen a young lady after eating a hearty burger at Johnny Rockets give the phone to her date and ask him to take a picture of her alone across the table (with the signature head tilt and pouted lips).

I just hope we are not becoming too vain all because there are tools that encourage the vanity! Is there another standard for taking pictures? You must have your head tilted at an angle with lips in a pout like Betty Boop? Remember Betty Boop was just a cartoon character and looking like her gives off a certain kind of impressions about you, which you might or might be aware of!
