TGIF Parents! It is the weekend, and we are looking at the family friendly explorations we can do online from the comforts of our home. Due to the pandemic, we have been limited to staying indoors for most of the year; and as a result, we’ve missed a lot of outdoor activities. From home, we can venture into a world of many heritages and cultures with the use of our smartphones and gadgets. Top World Heritage Sites to Explore

All over the world, even in the advanced countries, there are monumental sites from ancient times that are places of heritage and good exploration sites for tourists. These locations include The Pyramid of Giza in Egypt; regarded as the capital of the old kingdom of Egypt, and one of the seven wonders of the world; Robben Island South Africa, used as a prison, particularly in the 20th century for political prisoners – most notably Nelson Mandela; whose walls bore witness to the triumph of democracy and freedom over oppression and racism, and so many more.

Birth of the Nigerian Colony

Another online exploration we can undergo as a family is the birth and heritage of our own country. This exhibit tells the story of our colonialization by the British; The modern history of Nigeria – as a political state encompassing 250 to 400 ethnic groups of widely varied cultures and modes of political organization.

Nigerian Food Culture explained in 3 Yoruba sayings

We will also be exploring the vast culture of Nigerian Food. From the views of a Nigerian linguist, Kola Tunbosun, he detailed that there are three Yorùbá sayings that best illustrate the Nigerian attitude to food. Though the country has over 250 ethnic groups ⁠— each with its different cuisines, culture, and culinary cartography ⁠— these sayings have held through, from the deserts of Sokoto through the savannah, all the way to the swamps the tributaries of the Niger delta.

Online Game Activity: What Came First?

In all of these exploration activities is a fun activity for everyone in the family. The game, ‘What came first?’, for comparing cultural moments in time, by picking which art, ancient monument, person, etc, is the oldest of two available options. It is a fun and exciting way to spend the weekend and also learning something new in the process.
